Prokaryotae means ‘before nucleus’ as they evolved before the nucleus became the place to keep DNA. Therefore they have no nucleus; instead they have a loop of naked DNA which is not arranged in linear chromosomes.

Respiration is carried out on special membrane systems called mesosomes, not in mitochondria.
